                                    EARTH-ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES

                                      ST. LOUIS SCIENCE CENTER  (SLSC)

Application deadline:     Part-time, Unpaid Internships

For Fall Semester 2003,   Apply from 5 May to 1 September 2003

For Spring Semester 2004, Apply from May 2003 to  12 January 2004

Several internship configurations are possible:  Fall Semester 2003 (1 intern, possibly 2 interns)

Spring Semester 2004 (1 intern, possibly 2 interns)

Fall and Spring semesters combined (2 semester

Internship for 1 intern, possibly 2 interns)

This internship consists of the following components:

1)     Exhibit gallery familiarization phase, including learning how to present gallery activities to visitors

2)     An interval in which to develop and to present a new gallery activity or demonstration

3)     Development and delivery of activities and programs in support of the Lewis and Clark Bi-Centennial celebration at the St. Louis Science Center in 2003-2004

Each of these components will involve approximately 35-40 hours of time. A one-semester internship would require approximately 105-120 hours of time on a mutually agreeable schedule.  Prefer students enrolled at the Junior or Senior level majoring in any of the following:  Earth-Environmental Sciences, Biology, History,  Education, American Cultural Studies.

This internship  (for academic credit)  could integrate the efforts of one student for potentially two semesters (Fall 2003 and Spring 2004)  OR one student could be accommodated for a one semester Fall 2003 internship and another could negotiate to begin a Spring 2004 internship, implementing some of the efforts of the previous intern, and adding to them, and contributing to successful program  delivery in 2004.  Conceivably, 2 students could participate in Lewis and Clark internships during Fall semester and 2 other students could participate during Spring semester.

                                                SPECIFIC DETAILS ABOUT INTERNSHIP

1)     EXHIBIT GALLERY FAMILIARIZATION  Ð The Exhibit Gallery Familiarization  component  enables the intern to experience the Ecology-Environment gallery exhibits (Ecology of the Past, Ecology of the Present, and Ecology of the Future) and to increase the internÕs general knowledge about other exhibit galleries within the facility.

The intern will receive some training which explains the Gallery Visitor Experience and which reveals and mentors productive interaction strategies with visitors.  In tandem with this training experience, the intern will experience the current Omnimax film feature,  exhibits and operations within the Boeing  Space Station at the James S. McDonnell Planetarium, and the Special Exhibit.

In addition, the intern will receive an opportunity to peruse and to observe several popular gallery activity stations (e.g., Dinosaur Fossil Table, ÒName That Mineral!Ó, Stream Erosion Table, etc, and to select two of them for which to be subsequently trained and eventually scheduled for presentation to the public.

2)     DEVELOPMENT OF NEW GALLERY ACTIVITY OR DEMONSTRATION  -  The second component pertains to developing a new gallery activity or demonstration, refining and presenting it to the public, developing a training module for this activity or demonstration, and then training a staff person to also present same.

3)     RESEARCH FOR LEWIS AND CLARK BI-CENTENNIAL Ð The third component will involve research, design, development,  and implementation of educational activities and programs (including training staff) to be delivered as part of the St. Louis Science CenterÕs celebration of the Lewis and Clark Bi-Centennial in 2004.  Focus could relate to ecology, biology, and/or historical ramifications.

Although the initial days of the internship will most likely pertain to general orientation and familiarization efforts within the SLSC, the intern can expect to devote time to all three components described above.
